Mobile Phone Advertising - The Next Big Thing in Marketing

By Stephen Rankings

Mobile applications, mobile web and SMS or text messaging are huge! Unless you've been living under a rock, this comes as no real surprise. Just look at the number of iPhone, Blackberry and smart phones in people's hands and how many of them are glued to them all day long. While differing opinions exist as to whether it is a good thing or not, text messaging and mobile web have become a way of life. And as with every new technology advancement that takes off and finds huge numbers of raving fans, savvy businesses have found ways to capitalize and profit it. Introducing mobile phone advertising to such a connected crowd was destined to happen and did very quickly. However, just like any other type of advertising, it was yet to be seen whether it could be profitable or not and to what degree of success. Now that enough time has gone by and many companies are starting to talk about their tests and data, it is being proven to be wildly successful beyond even what the original projections indicated. That being said, mobile phone advertising just like any other marketing endeavor has to be put forth with intelligent and well thought out objectives and an understanding of target markets, demographics, etc. not to mention an understanding of the technology and how to make it work from a business/marketing standpoint.

The fact is, this is still a very new business strategy and a leading edge market. While the internet, vast in the knowledge that can be obtained, collected and absorbed, can be used to learn just about anything, it has surprisingly little to be gathered on this growing market. This could be because of its newness or because so many people are guarding their secrets for as long as possible before the greater population figures it out and begins to eat into their profits. In either case, finding this information is tough and even tougher to carry out without the proper knowledge.

There have been very few marketing strategies lately that have taken the world by storm and been much more than rehashed stuff that has been used since the dawn of advertising. Some would argue that social media is probably the best thing that has happened in the last five years online, and it would be tough to disagree. With the introduction of videos and web 2.0, the internet just continues to grow by leaps and bounds with no end in sight. However, with the introduction and mass explosion of mobile web and the portability of the internet, it's hard to imagine the possibilities and where we may be heading next. It's not enough to have a page on a social site anymore, you have to be able to access it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and let everyone know what you are doing all the time. Truly amazing! From a business standpoint, it is the most exciting advancement that we have seen in a very, very long time and to be involved with this huge and growing market in its infancy stages makes the opportunity extraordinary.

It's pretty safe to say that mobile phone advertising and the business it will produce over the next few years are sure to change the face of marketing as we now know it. One can only imagine what the future holds and what the next innovation will bring. I personally can't wait!
